The Hoohaa Monologues

vaginaWhen Even Ensler wrote The Vagina Monologues in the mid 1990's, I'm pretty sure she didn't do so with the intent of continuing the use of childish slang for women's anatomy. Unfortunately, that's just what is going on in a Florida comedy club.

Story goes that a woman driving by Atlantic Theatres in Atlantic Beach, Florida received a complaint about their marquee advertising an upcoming production of Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. Complaining that her niece asked her what a “vagina" was after reading the sign, this humorless, uptight mouth-breather told theatre manager that she was offended by the sign. Never one to miss a chance for some publicity and news time, manager Bryce Pfanenstiel acquiesced, and changed the marquee to read The Hoohaa Monlogues.

All I hope is that this points out how ridiculous complaining about the word vagina is, and not some excuse for vagina-hating backwoods hicks to think that their opinions actually matter. We can keep hoping too, as the theatre did go ahead and change the title on the marquee back after complaints from the student group putting on the play about the slang replacement.
